Egypt and global energy company TotalEnergies have signed a new agreement to explore gas opportunities in the country’s north-western offshore region, adding to growing interest in Africa’s energy sector.
The agreement, signed with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, sets out a framework for technical cooperation and early exploration work to assess deep offshore gas potential.
The project remains at an early stage, with initial work expected to focus on geological studies and subsurface evaluations before any drilling activity takes place. Exploration agreements like these often act as the first step toward larger investments involving infrastructure, engineering services and future energy development.
Egypt has increasingly positioned itself as a regional gas hub, supported by existing export facilities and strategic infrastructure linking African, Middle Eastern and European markets.
“We are pleased to launch this cooperation with EGAS, which reflects our shared ambition to further strengthen our partnership with the Arab Republic of Egypt,” said Nicola Mavilla, Senior Vice President for Exploration at TotalEnergies, in a statement.
The announcement arrives at a time when several African countries are expanding efforts to strengthen energy security while attracting investment into large-scale infrastructure projects. Natural gas continues to feature prominently in those discussions, particularly as governments seek economic growth opportunities while balancing longer-term sustainability goals.
