Eskom has suspended planned bulk electricity interruptions in two municipalities following legal action, while scheduled cuts in one area are still expected to proceed.

The utility had planned to interrupt supply to Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality, Kai !Garib Local Municipality and Mamusa Local Municipality over unpaid electricity accounts.

Eskom said legal developments involving the first two municipalities led to a temporary pause. According to the utility, it will suspend supply interruptions “to respect the court process” while matters are heard.

Interruptions affecting parts of Mamusa Local Municipality, including Migdol and Schweizer Reneke villages, are still expected to continue from 8 May, with residents facing scheduled outages during early morning, daytime and evening periods.

The development comes as South Africa continues a period of improved grid stability after more than a year with significantly fewer rolling blackouts nationally.
